BIRDS YOU HANG OUT WITH

A man from Australia found a wounded starling and taught the bird to whistle his favorite football team’s anthem. In 2020, Anthony Costa, found the baby bird in poor condition in his garden. Costa named the bird Bubba and nursed him back to health.

“I talked to him constantly, then one night out of the blue he said, ‘What are you doing?’ It blew my mind! He speaks small sentences such as, ‘Bubba likes tickles,’ ‘You’re so pretty,’ and ‘Come here.’” Costa decided to teach Bubba the AFL Hawthorn football club’s anthem. “I started whistling the first two verses, and he repeated it,” Costa said. A video of Bubba whistling the football tune went viral on Instagram.

Did you know birds learn to sing by mimicking what they hear? People assumed birds were born knowing how to sing until scientists did an experiment. They raised certain birds away from others of their own kind, and discovered the birds weren't able to sing the songs their species sang. But that’s not all. Scientists were able to teach birds a different song to replace the one their species normally sang.

What’s true for birds also applies to humans. If you’re hanging around with the wrong birds, you will start singing their song. We become like the people we fellowship with. Paul said, “Do not be deceived: Bad company corrupts good morals” (1 Cor. 15:33). Immoral friends will corrupt a good person. If they gossip, you’ll gossip. If they do drugs, you’ll also do drugs. If they whine and complain, so will you.

But the opposite is also true. Proverbs 13:20 says, “He who walks with wise men will be wise.” Wise people will choose to fellowship with people who walk with God. If you want to know if someone is wise or a fool, just look at their friends and listen to the songs they’re singing.
